Cavalier, Mount Pleasant in entertaining 2-2 draw
The Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore-coached Mount Pleasant lead atop the points standing of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) was reduced to goal difference last night after they played to a 2-2 draw with Cavalier at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
The clash featured Cavalier's Collin Anderson and Mount Pleasant's Trivante Stewart, the league's top goalscorers and lived up to expectations, with Mount Pleasant failing to register three points against the spirited Cavalier, to join Arnett Gardens on 36 points at the top of the standings. Mount Pleasant, however, lead on goal difference.
Mount Pleasant, who came out the hotter of the two, opened their scoring as early as the fourth minute, as the inform Stewart capitalised on Ricardo Morris' powerful shot to convert from close range. Two minutes later, Cavalier were looking down a 2-2-0 barrel as Atapharoy Bygrave's defence-splitting dribble and through pass to Ricardo Morris was slotted home from close range by the latter.
Cavalier roared back through Ronaldo Webster in the 10th minute and Dwayne 'Busy' Atkinson in the 39th to level the score and sent both down the halftime tunnel at two goals apiece.
Both kept each other at arm's length in the second half to share the points.
Assistant coach of Mount Pleasant, Warren Barrett, was disappointed in their performance.
"A game lasts for 90 minutes, so there is no guarantee that you go two goals up early that you're going to win the game. We started brightly, and we approached the game the way that we wanted to, aggressive with our press, moved the ball well. I thought after the second goal, we got complacent and allowed them back into the game," Barrett stated.
His counterpart, Rudolph Speid, believes his players lacked mental alertness in the early stages.
"I thought it was just eight minutes of madness in the first half. We tried to play from the back when we knew they were going to press high and we conceded two goals. I was never worried because if goals are going to score against you, early is the best time because you'll have a lot of time to come back," said Speid.
