Jailed university student begs for release

A university student made an impassioned plea to a presiding judge to be released from custody or sentenced, as he yearns to continue his undergraduate studies.

"Your Honour, please, I'm supposed to join the batch that just start back UWI [University of the West Indies, Mona]. Just please Your Honour, me caah make the bail, just sentence me or something please," the defendant Giovanni Wilson pleaded.

Wilson is before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court for unlawful wounding and being armed with an offensive weapon, a matter that has been before the courts since 2022. The allegations were not shared in court, however, Wilson maintained his innocence.

"Your Honour, just let the complainant come court and tell the truth. Me get a bail offer but my mother nuh have nuh house title and the $30,000 cash woulda be too much; we nuh have so much money," Wilson said.

Parish Judge Venise Blackstock-Murray had the matter adjourned until October 25, to allow for the complainant and investigator to attend. - T.T.
