Having starred in some of the hottest music videos and contributed to the choreography behind countless others, Shanice Xpressionz is one of the more well-known practitioners in dancing. But like so many of her colleagues, her career has been seriously affected by the coronavirus outbreak. But resolute to find ways to stay afloat in these difficult times, the Dance Xpressionz member, urged by her mentor, decided to start online dance classes.

"When COVID-19 really started to hit, it was Orville Hall (Dance Xpressionz head) that really started thinking ahead. It was his idea to go online because with borders closed, no travelling was happening and we needed to find a way to continue doing what we love and earn from it," she told Dancers' Paradise. "It (the coronavirus) really slowed things down for me as an entertainer. Tours, parties, which I was booked for, either got cancelled or postponed. These classes have been going on for a month and a half now and honestly, it's been really great, I can't complain."

Utilising the widely popular Zoom platform, the dancer teaches classes from the comfort of her home.

"I teach twice for the week. We have xpressive moves going on which is for both local and international on the programme. I teach soca class on a Monday and that runs from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and then on Thursday, I teach the latest dancehall moves to female participants. That starts at 2 p.m. Jamaica time," she said.

The dancer says although it did take some time adjusting to life in 'lockdown mode', it has not been particularly difficult for her.

"To be honest, it's not so difficult. The timing for curfew hours might be a bit challenging but it was a clean switch over and I have to thank Orville Xpressionz and my team for that. Also, when things get hard, my daughter and my big sister keep me motivated and strong," she said.
